Sliding Pivot Foot Roll Tutorial

In this tutorial I show how you can create a sliding pivot foot roll using nodes. The first part of the rig is the same as Chris Lesage's rig but instead of an expression i used nodes. And I only add some stuff on top of that to make it work for any shape.
Make sure to visit Chris's site and check out his awesome reel.

  1. Nice tutorial! - I saw the toe clipping the ground when you were rotating the control. You could easily solve this using the convex hull of the mesh as the shape instead of following the edge exactly (which could possibly be automated) - http://cgm.cs.mcgill.ca/~beezer/cs507/mygifs/figure3.gif

    1. Hi Charles.
Thanks for watching. And thank you for the tip. The good thing about this method is that I can shape the curve any way that I want. It can follow the foot exactly or it could follow a convex hull shape.
For me the clipping is not a problem, actually that kind of rotation could come in handy when the foot is not on the ground or it is placed on a ledge, or on a pipe, or anything that needs an unusual rotation pivot.
Anyway this tutorial does not demonstrate how to set up a functional foot rig. It is a base that could be worked upon to create something that is more useful to animators.

  2. Yay! Got my reverse-foot Sliding-pivot to work (youtu.be/iOFO-i3F7wY) except for one thing ... but I cannot figure out how to add a rotation around the vertical. Have solid rotation around the X & Z axes but nothing around the Y.
    Any clues Armin?
    :)

    1. Hey Craig!
I haven't messed around with that but from your video it looks like it could be handled by changing the rotation order on the locator that rotates the foot. Try something like XZY so the X and Z axes won't affect the Y and you will always have it vertical.

    1. Jeff Brodsky has a great video on this subject (https://vimeo.com/72424469) it is the video that I started with and added some other functionality on top of that.
